With Summer now a distant memory, DUO have had a busy time, traveling the world, enjoying some top notch fishing and attending the various fishing trade shows and events. This contest will kick start things again, with several more to follow over the winter months.

So for this contest, DUO are reaching out to their global fans. To enter, you need to take a photo of your DUO lure(s) in your city or location, depending on where in the world you are. If you can showcase a local attraction, or include something that makes your area famous, then that will go a long way to helping you with the contest results.

As an example, here is a photo from DUO's Peruvian distributor Todo Pesca;

As you can see above, if you can include the name of the location where the picture was taken on the photo, then you will be entered into the draw for one of the 5 DUO prize packs. The deadline to get your entry in for is 15th November 2013. Submit them by email to duocontest@gmail.com
Spring low
tide and crystal clear conditions have never been very productive at the

Majorcraft KG Evolution KGS -1062H 10’6 40-80g These rods are not subtle, with
large foam handles, and some real power in the blank. Designed really for hard

So armed
with the heavier rod of the two, I paired it up with a Shimano Stella 5000SW,
spooled with some Sunline Momentum 4x4 30lb braid. This line has the strength
to withstand casting heavy metal jigs, whilst maintaining a thin diameter, to
enable true distance casting. The lure I was using throughout this session was
a 65g metal jig, rigged with both a treble on the rear, and a assist hook on
the front.

Within the first few casts, it was immediately apparent that fishing at distance was no problem for this set up. The metal jig flying through the air for some time before making it's splash down. The benefits of a 5000 size reel or bigger comes to light, as meters and meters peel off the spool. Letting the lure sink down through the water, then working it back to shore. I tried a few different styles of retrieve, from the fast jigging style, pumping and winding the reel, to the more traditional slower sink and draw. The first fish to be landed were some decent sized Gar, which were flanked by more Gar as they came in. Then it was into the Mackerel, mostly taking the lure hard on the drop off the cast. The Mackerel were real beasts, biggest I have had this Summer, thick and long.

First one felt like a good size, heavy fight, trying to take me into the thick kelp beds. As the fish came in, it was then I realised I had a double hook up on the metal jig, with a Mackerel on the treble, and a Bass on the front assist. Not sure if the Mackerel was hooked first, and the Bass went in for the easy target! Following that, another Bass was landed, again taking the lure at distance in the deeper waters. As the tide began to push hard, I finished the session by landing numerous small Pollack, that were really going for the lure, when worked fast and hard.

Conditions
looked promising for an after work session on a local reef. High tide meant
some special tactics were gonna be needed to access the sweet spots due to the
high spring tide. This is where the wetsuit, dry bag and of course the Van

more specifically is a 3/2mm zipperless wetsuit by West (one of my many surfing

Patagonia wading boots. I use a 20L roll top dry bag with a buit in shoulder
strap, some plastic sealed boxes inside, containing a small selection of hard
and soft lures, as well as the tools and hardware needed for a session. With
this kit, and the Van Staal, I am able to drop into deep gullies, and swim
between rocks, to get the best access when waders just wont cut it.

coming for a swim this evening is the Major Craft KG Evolution Hirasuzuki

and reliable Sunline Super Braid PE#3 (30lb). I have found this line to respond
well to the rough environment associated with wetsuit fishing amongst the
rocks, in the water filled gullies. PE#3 might seem a bit scary to people, but
it really is not that thick in the fingers, and distance casting when using the
heavier kit is not an issue. The fact it is a bit thicker, means you are less
likely to have any braid related issues, especially when you are in and out of
the water, rock scrambling and casting out in less than ideal conditions.

reef I was fishing out over is a bit of a tackle graveyard for anything that
dives deep, or softies on jigheads. The minimal swell and fizz to the water was
shouting out for some surface lure action. I worked a DUO Realis Pencil in a
couple of colours, in between the rock heads, bringing the lure to life across
the water. It was not long until the first Bass hit the lure, and brought to my
feet. Only a small one, but a good sign that the fish were there. The next Bass
was a much better size. It swirled twice at the lure, I kept working it back in,
and the third time it hit, giving a good fight as it made a break for the
deeper water. Another schoolie after that finished off a fun evening on the reef.

The down side to this, means I am super-busy at work, and so my opportunities to fish are slim to none! I did manage to get a quick evening session in last week, fishing in the bay, into deep kelpy waters.

I wanted to push the Major Craft Volkey Bait Finesse Series rod further, with the hope of finding some bigger Pollack and Wrasse. I paired the rod up with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL, spooled up with Sunline Siglon Mono 8lb straight through. Not a finesse reel by any standards, but it sits well on the rod, and casts well enough with the lures I would be using.

I started out fishing with the superb Ecogear 3" BugAnts in some bright pinks and oranges, to get the Pollacks attention. These were rigged weedless Texas style with 5g sinkers, on a size 2 hook. Bouncing them along the bottom, and swimming them deep, as the small swell washed amongst the rocks, the hits began to happen, and fish were landed. There were some bigger fish in amongst the small ones, giving a good bend to the rod.

Switching things up, I went with a DUO Bay Ruf SV80 vib lure. Buzzing it through the water column brough some more small fish in, and also a bigger example as seen below. The Pollack were hitting the lure hard, some breaching the surface to try and grab th lure as I brought it out to re-cast.

As the tide ebbed, I was able to access the rock from where I like to hunt the Wrasse. Switching back to the Ecogear soft plastics, the lure bringing most fish in was an Ecogear Straight 3.24" rigged jika style on a 3.5g sinker. As the high tide prevented my accessing the really productive ground, the fish landed were all little nippers! Walking back to the car, the light fading, the view out over the bay was a awesome.
Tuesday this week I had high hopes of fishing glory. I was joining a friend aboard his boat, for a day of fishing out of Dartmouth. The tide was good, the sea was flat calm, and the sun was shining with no wind. I had borrowed a couple of rods from Andrew Younger of Finesse Fishing for the day. These were the Tenryu Bulldog Evo 7.0 and a Tenryu Horizon HSL66B-ML. The Bulldog I paired up with a Shimano Stella SW5000 reel, loaded with Sunline Momentum 4x4 PE#2 / 30lb, and the Horizon was kitted with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL loaded with Sunline Superbraid PE#2 / 20lb.

To cut a long story short, 7 hours of fishing, resulted in one small Pollack landed between us. The fish simply were not there. We tried different locations, switched between styles, but apart from one Bass that shook the hook before coming to the boat, no sign of fishy life! I did however get a pretty good tan out on the water all day! The Tenryu Horizon is a really interesting rod. It looks a bit like a bait finesse rod, but I was happily jigging 100g with it. It says the max is 150g on the blank, but not sure I would go that heavy with it. If I was out on a boat a lot more often, it's definitely a rod I would like to own.

So Wednesday night, I wanted to feed my hunger for a fish this week. Headed out in the bay on a paddle ski, again to perfect evening conditions. I wanted to fish a mark usually only accessible at low tide. With the big spring, the only signs of land were a couple of rocky pinnacles breaking the surface. Fishing with the Bulldog Evo, this time paired with the Van Staal VSB150 loaded with Sunline Superbraid PE#3 / 30lb, rigged up some soft plastic lures on 1oz Jika rigs.

As I drifted off the rocky shelf into deeper water, the bites started to happen, with the familiar tap, tap, tap of the Wrasse. The Bulldog is a real took for the job vertical fishing, a nice bend, but lots of power, able to easily bully the Wrasse from the rocky depths. No big fish came to the ski, but good sport none the less. Best results came fishing the Ecogear Power Dart Minnow on a 2/0 weedless hook.

These lures are a thing of beauty, great colour patterns, and a design that you can put great confidence in, with a proven track record.
The water has slowly started to warm up, and it seemed a good opportunity to get out there and do some fishing afloat in the evenings.

Met up with a mate, and we took to the sea in his small boat, with the hope of finding a few fish, and to check out the conditions and signs at this time of the season. I decided to fish with a baitcastwer set up, my Major Craft Volkey Big Lake Custom rod, paired with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL reel, spooled with Sunline Super Braid PE#2.0 / 20lb.

The wind was making our drifts a bit too quick, and we had to keep repositioning the boat, making the fishing a little tricky at times. The water was flat calm tho, and the recent algae bloom was not too much of a problem where we were. One downside was we simply did not see the promising signs of fish breaking the surface, baitfish scattering etc. It took a while, but finally, after clipping on a DUO Tide Minnow SLD125, I had a hook up just as the lure hit the water. Only a small Bass, but a very welcome one.

We fished on, changing spots untill dusk, and decided to call it a day, with just one other Bass following the lure to the boat. Earlier in the week, I had ventured out on a fishing ski, for a paddle around the bay. It had been a while since I last fished from a very small craft, and forgot how awkward the simple things can be when space and balance is limited. Didn't find any Bass that evening, but the Mackerel and Wrasse were about. It was a good chance to try out the Van Staal VSB150B reel I recently picked up, a real workhorse, and not a problem using it in the wet conditions when fishing afloat on a small craft.
Sunline Super Braid PE#2.5 30lb and the Sunline Siglon V Mono 4kg / 8lb. I also use both these lines on my Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL baitcaster, with the Super Braid in 20lb, and the Siglon V in 14lb.

The 30lb Super Braid has been spooled on my Van Staal VS150B. This is the first time I have loaded a line onto this reel. It does have a bit of an ugly shape to the line lay, which can be corrected by some hand winding of the backing onto the spool first. With a monster capacity, there is a lot of backing to put on! First attempt is by no means perfect, hopefully I will even it out better in future spooling. This line is going to get a good workout, with deep wading, submerged reel, in amongst the surf. I went with the Super Braid as I wanted something tough, reliable and up to the job.

The 8lb Siglon Mono has been loaded onto the factory spool of my Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL. I wanted a lighter version to compliment the 14lb I have, for presentation of smaller lures and weights. The 14lb has already proved itself to be very capable of fighting the Wrasse in amongst the rough stuff, so I am confident this 8lb mono will be more than up to the job. With the line coming in 300m spools, you can load up a couple of reels with this mono, depending on your reel size.

With the decision to fish 2013 with heavier, bigger tackle, it made sense to get some of the heavy hitters from DUO. With the Bass starting to show here and there, and the imminent arrival of consistent numbers, here is a look at what will be hanging out of of the mouth of those silver predators in the coming months.
The sea, whilst still cold, has been very flat and crystal clear. A short after work session was on the cards, fishing locally in South West Devon, with the tide pushing from low.

It was a good chance to get some more time on the water with the Major Craft Volkey Big Lake Custom Series VKC-70/BL 7' / 3/8 - 1.5oz. Paired with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL, freshly loaded with a spool of Sunline Siglon V Mono 14lb.
Target species was Wrasse, fishing amongst the deep kelp strewn gullies, left by the receded tide. Kept it simple with a 7g Texas rig and a size 1 wide gape weedless hook. No need for a leader with the mono, quick and easy. I fished the whole session with just one type of lure, the Ecogear Minnow M. I had good success with it towards the end of last year, and Luke at cornwalllurefishing has been really smashing the Wrasse with it lately. Conditions were pretty much perfect at the waters edge, oily calm water, blue skies and evening sun.

The action came fast, with 11 Wrasse being landed, and a couple lost. The 7g rig plus lure would be at the suggested lower end of the rods capability, but I found casting and working the lure slow close to and along the seas bed to be very good. The rod tip is more sensitive than maybe the rating suggests, and easily transfered small bites into big hook ups.
It has been a while since I had fish landed in numbers, hopefully the hard winter weather is now behind us, looking forward to a great season. A good first outing the with Sunline Siglon V Mono, cast well, and no problems with the Wrasse dragging it in and over the rough stuff, will get some more time with it in the coming weeks. The rod proved a great tool, breaking the fish out from the deep kelp cover, whilst still enjoying the fight. Should prove a good tool when hunting for those monster Wrasse.

I have more wetsuits than I know what to do with, and this year I am gonna use a couple of them in my fishing missions. Fishing sandbanks till the tides in, crossing estuaries, reaching those rocky outcrops that are just too far, all in my plans.

So I need a reel that can take the abuse of constant dunking, even swimming. Using my Shimano Stella SW5000 is out of the question, and a name that pops up time and time again when looking into this kind of fishing reel abuse is Van Staal, and in this case, it's the VSB150 I have managed to get my hands on.
Yes it's big, heavy and agricultural in it's mechanical winding, polar opposites to my Stella in terms of smoothness, but it's built to be tough, and do a job no other reel I own does. Line capacity is massive, and I am going to have to be artistic with the backing to get the desired line lay, the final 150m will be some of the tough and reliable Sunline Super Braid in 30lb. Thats all for now, more to come when it's spooled and put into use, as long as the sea temps keep rising before I take the plunge!WeAreMemorieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05046175648627975424noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3868337036165396928.post-37371022294621542712013-04-15T20:43:00.001+01:002013-04-15T20:43:44.877+01:00Refresh and ReloadThe downtime in fishing for me at the moment seems to be dragging on. However, a lack of fish locally has coincided nicely with a very busy period at home and with work, so at least I don't feel like I am missing out (too much!). With thoughts of getting out there again soon, spare time has been well spent preparing some new and old lines for the season ahead.
The Sunline Siglon V mono is a new line to me. It has been loaded onto the factory spool of my Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL baitcast reel. This will be getting a good test run on the Wrasse, putting it in amongst the rough stuff, see how it fairs.

Similarly, the Sunline Super Braid has also been loaded onto my Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL, but on the RCS shallow spool. Again, a braid I have not used before from Sunline. It has also been a good couple of years since I last used a 4 strand braid, having favored the 8 strand variety more recently. Looking forward to trying it out, and testing it in comparison to it's 8 strand companions.

The Sunline Momentum 4x4 in PE1 / 16lb is a line I have used before, a bit of a favorite of mine. I have not had the chance to load it up yet, but it will be going on a Daiwa Certate 2500 reel, and will be used for light plugging duties on my Daiwa morethan Branzino Urban Side Custom rod (8'7 5-24g).

A couple of lines I have refreshed are the Sunline Momentum Small Game PE and the Rockfish PE braids. Both lines have been carefully stripped off the spools, new backing added, and then spooled again in reverse, so the line that was previously buried, is now on the top, fresh and ready for action. Both these lines add themselves so well to the light game applications. I use the Small Game PE 8lb (pink) from 2g LRF duties up to sub 10g ultra light plugging. Sensitive, very thin, but strong, it gives me great confidence. Similarly the Rockfish PE in 10lb breaking strain (orange), used for light jig head work, fishing the bottom on the open coast is no problem with the right tackle, this line has helped me pull some great fish up to the top.

It does take a little effort to reverse your lines, but in the interest of longevity, and also keep the spool filled correctly, all helps towards making the most of your tackle. Although this year I will be taking a strong interest in using the heavier gear, there is very much still the time and place for a more finesse approach, and the two braids above will be at the forefront of my light game tactics.

The weather was predicted sunny, last of a pumping ground swell surging through the clear water, it had been a while since I was able to fish this stretch of exposed coast.

It was the first outing in the salty stuff with the Major Craft Big Lake Custom rod, and I was looking forward to using its power on some Wrasse, who inhabit these granite boulder and kelp strewn waters. Paired with the rod was a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL baitcaster reel, spooled with Sunline Castaway PE1.5 / 25lb. Rigged up a few Ecogear soft plastics, but the one doing the business today was the Ecogear Power Dart Minnow. Usually I rig this lure on the specific Power Dart jig head, but they are also effective Texas style, and the first fish today came from a drop shot rig.

The second fish was a decent size, my best Wrasse for a while. It gave me a chance to put a bend in the Volkey rod, and use its power to break the fish from its heavy cover. Shortly after landing this fish, the weather decided to change for the worse, as the Westerly winds picked up, and the swell increased, making conditions tricky, so called it a day.

Small morning weather window saw me shoot off with the Major Craft Bait Finesse rod, paired with a Shimano Calcutta 51DC loaded with some 10.3lb Sunline Siglon fluoro mainline.

Rigged up a 4" shad on a jig head, cast out into the deep water, waited till I felt bottom contact, then a slow retrieve, with the occasional pause. As the lure came into the Shallows, a take on the first cast resulted in a Pike on the bank.

Unfortunately, it was the case today, where the first cast resulted in the last fish of the session. I walked a short distance to where I have found fish to hold before, but nothing at home, with a variety of lures cast out into the water. As the forecast had predicted, the wind came up with some heavy rain, so called it a day. As I approached my car, I decided on one last cast, feeling ever hopeful. However I failed to spot my lure clipped a tree branch whilst powering out a cast, resulting in the worst backlash I have had to date. Nothing left but to try and sort it out back at home!

WeAreMemorieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05046175648627975424noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3868337036165396928.post-40842406525794812902013-01-31T14:39:00.001+00:002013-01-31T16:00:14.205+00:00Finding ShelterWhere fishing is concerned, the number one subject of the last few months seems to be the weather, and with the first month of 2013 now gone, it would appear little has improved. Wednesday saw a break in the torrential rain, however the gale force Westerlies that remained were gonna make things tricky. Finding shelter seemed the only option, with some reports showing wind swell of 17 feet on the coast.

So I picked my spot. Pretty much guaranteed no swell here, but the wind is still a big factor. With a handy point surrounded by the sea, it does mean you can pick a spot that is going to offer a little protection, and fish with the wind on your back if needed. It was that strong down on the waters edge, that I was easily knocked off balance by the gusts.

I was looking to get into some Wrasse action with the Major Craft Bait Finesse rod, paired up with a Shimano Calcutta 51DC baitcaster, and spooled with some Sunline Siglon 10.3lb fluoro mainline. Its a mix or rough weedy grounds, with occasional sandy patches, so weedless soft plastics Texas rigged was the best option, and as he tide began to flood, the occasional investigative tap, tap turned into a couple of Wrasse landed.

The lure doing the business today was a 4" Nories Shrilpin, on a size 2 weedless wide gape hook. With the conditions how they were, and the poor vis in the mixed up water, a short session with two Wrasse to show for it was most welcome, especially as opportunities to get out on the Coast have been few and far between of late.WeAreMemorieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05046175648627975424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3868337036165396928.post-48680946450034625502013-01-23T20:44:00.000+00:002013-01-23T20:50:01.543+00:00Major Craft Volkey BFS ChristenedWednesday seems to be the day I take myself off for a little fresh water action. Whilst the majority of the country is covered in snow with minus temperatures, West Cornwall is enjoying some sunny and relatively mild weather. This suits me as far as staying comfortable whilst out and about fishing!

Having christened the Major Craft Volkey Big Lake Special last week on the Pike, today I set up the Major Craft Bait Finesse rod (more details HERE), with the thoughts of targeting Perch. Paired it up with a Shimano Calcutta 51DC spooled with Sunline Momentum 4x4 PE#1.0 / 16lb. This 8 strand line has really been impressive during it's use over the last year or so. One thing that always suprises me is just how strong it is, a very tough braid, and it has served me well on both fixed spool and baitcast reels. A selection of Ecogear soft lures and jig heads completed the kit list, and I was ready to go!

Today was to be a short session, making the most of the late morning conditions. Working one side of the reservoir, divided my time between a few locations that have shown fish in the previous few weeks. With a mix of straight retrieves, and bottom twitching, after a tentative knock, a fish on. Brought into the net at the bankside, a healthy Perch in great condition.

The lure combo that tempted this Perch, was an Ecogear 4" Power Shad, mounted on an Ecogear 3D jighead, with an Ecogear Blade Spin mounted on the underside of the jig head.

Things went quiet afer the one Perch, and after a few more knocks, and a follow from a small Pike, it was time to head home, short and sweet. Target fish achieved, and the first bend in the Volkey Bait Finesse rod. Looking forward to getting a few more sessions under my belt with this rod, I have a feeling it will quickly become a favorite set up to use.WeAreMemorieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05046175648627975424noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3868337036165396928.post-47664444920581580292013-01-20T21:12:00.002+00:002013-01-20T21:13:43.913+00:00Shimano Stella 5000SWI was needing a reel to put on the Major Craft 11' Hira Suzuki rod which I recently talked about in this blog post HERE After doing some research, and trying a few reels on the rod here and there, I finally settled on a Shimano Stella 5000SW. This reel is a decent size and weight, and feels at home on the big 11' rod.

Coming in at 400g, with a great line capacity, a tough salt water proof reel, it's more than up to the job of launching lures out at long distance in search of Bass. As you would expect from a reel of this pedigree, just turning it over in the hand, the build quality is imediately apparent, with those 14 bearings making the action super smooth. Line capacity is stated as 240 yards of 10lb mono, I spooled it up with 200m of Sunline Momentum 4x4 with some additional backing to fill the cold forged aluminium spool out nicely.
I had a few casts this afternoon with this set up, and initial thoughts are very promising, great distance and control, I can see it being a very useful tool in the Bass hunting stakes this year. I have also picked up a couple of bigger, heavier lures to throw;
I have been super-keen to get out with at least one of the new Major Craft rods this week, so today I headed off locally to see if I could find some Pike. A cold, early start, with light rain and grey skies. Opting for the heavier approach, the set up I went with was the Major Craft Volkey Big Lake Custom (7' long, rated 3/8 - 1&1/2oz) with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL loaded with 25lb Sunline Castaway 1.5PE / 25lb.

Working a deep section, just tripped the lure along the bottom, like a baitfish feeding. Slow with pauses, a good take and hook up saw the first fish to put a bend in the rod. Once netted and onto the grassy bank, could see that this Pike was a new personal best for myself. A quick photo, and released nice and healthy back to the deeps.
As the day started to brighten up, and the light winds swirled, I began to walk around the reservoir I was on. Moving in towards the shallow and weed lined water, switched lures to a unweighted weedless rigged softie. I had a couple of follows, followed by a good take at the line of weed, which I saw myself, but the hook up was not to be. I have found this to happen a few times now when using weedless rigged large softs with Pike, whether it is bad angling, or mismatched tackle, definitely something I need to work on.

As the day went on, made my way back to where I had my first fish, to see if any other were at home. Just when I was looking to call it a day, a strong take, and then the fish came alive, the new rod had a proper bend in it, and the drag on the Ryoga started to sing, something I don't hear very often! Four really powerful runs from this fish, definitely the best fight I have had from a Pike, and on the heaviest gear I have used for them. Up on the bank, yet again, my PB had improved (starting to think I need to take my scales with me now!).
The Volkey rods are ready to go, hopfully targeting some Pike and Perch respectively as the weather chills down Nationally. Hoping to source a suitable reel for the Hirasuzuki this coming week, then it will be a big lure and distance game down on the coast! Hopefully will have some catch reports soon featuring these new bits of kit. Various shops now Stock Major Craft in the UK now, so take a look around if you want one, or check out the English language Major Craft website HERE

Planned earlier this week to fish the coast, but the gap in the weather seemed to get smaller and smaller the closer we got to Friday, so played it safe and decided to hit the fresh stuff up for some Pike hunting instead. Fishing a West Cornwall Reservoir, the water clarity was looking good, and the surface was just being rippled by a building wind.

With the reservoir providing a bit more room to swing a lure, I was using the Daiwa morethan Branzino Urban Side Custom 8'7 5-24g rod, paired with a 2500 size Daiwa Certate, loaded with 0.8PE / 12lb Sunline Castaway. My wire trace was 10lb Drennen Super Soft, crimped direct to lure. A selection of heavy jig heads and and Ecogear soft lures completed the tackle list.

The lures rigged on a heavy jig head, meant I was able to bounce along the bottom on a slow retrieve, like a small bait fish feeding off the reservoir bed. The water was deep in the section I was fishing, but the set up still allowed good feel at distance. It was not long till the first Pike of the day was guided into my landing net and on the bank. Over a couple of hours, managed to land four Pike in total, which were all progressively bigger. The last fish of the day was a PB for me, but as I do not carry a measure or scales anymore, can't confirm a weight or size.
The lure doing the catching today was the Ecogear 4.5" BTS shad in a couple of different colour patterns, rigged on 10 & 12g jig heads. The lure looks great in the water, especially being tripped along the bottom, activating the paddle tail.
So a great start to the new year, some decent action and an unofficial PB. This year I am looking forward to getting out onto the fresh water locations more and more. Next target is the first salty beast of the year, and hopefully sometime soon! With the typical howling winds and monstrous swell, decided to seek the shelter of the large Estuary mouth. The wind would be minimal, and on my back, and guaranteed flat calm, my final chance of 2012. Bad news was the tides were not great for this spot, fishing the last couple of hours down, and a couple into the flood. Arriving at the headland, before my descent, a look at the water and it was as I thought, nice and calm. Just another of those amazing views that seem to greet me every time I head out to fish in West Cornwall.
With the Wrasse in mind, today I was fishing with the Nories Rockfish Bottom casting rod, paired with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016HL baitcast reel, with a spool of Sunline Siglon Fluorocarbon 10.3lb and a spare spool loaded with Sunline Castaway 1.5PE (25lb). A decent selection of Ecogear soft lures in the 3-5" range, and some weedless wide gape hooks, a range of Texas cone weights, perfect for searching the estuary bottom, with a mix of shail and heavy weed with submerged rocks. The view at water level looked very promising, with the clarity being decent considering the weather conditions of late.
The fishing was slow, very slow. As the tide turned, I started to get a few tell tale signs that the Wrasse were about, with a few nips at the lure, but with no hook ups, most probably some smaller fish. Switching over to the braid spool, started fishing at greater distance, hoping to find the fish as the moved in with the tide onto the reef. The flurocarbon is great for the close range work, especially for its abraision resistance amongst the rough grounds, but the braid definitely beats it for fishing at distance, especially for contact feel with the lure further out. After a couple more tentative knocks, finally hooked into a fish, and landed the only Wrasse of the day, my last fish of 2012, taken on an Ecogear 5" Paramax.
One thing that I noticed of late, especially when stood around out in the elements fishing, is just how mild the weather has been with these recent storms and winds. I fished this session without the gloves and base layers I would normally expect to wear at the end of December.

One thing that has changed in my gear the last couple of months is I no longer wear waders and wading boots. My waders have started to leak in the stocking foot after just over one and a half years. Not bad going really, considering the distance I walk in them, and the fact they are really designed for fresh water wading, not the rough tough salty environments I put them through. So now, I am wearing a pair of lightweight waterproof trousers, and some boots.

I deliberated over what boots to get for a long time, with the winter months in mind, they had to be waterproof, tough, and cope with the mud and sludge of the coast paths. After looking over the designer walk boots, and trail boot options, I bought something very different.
These are the winter issue Army boots. Leather, fully waterproof, even when submerged to above the ankle, Goretex lined with a Vibram sole. I then added some cheap Snowbee studs, for a little extra winter grip on the slippy stuff. I have been wearing them for the last couple of months, and very pleased so far. Tough, supportive and warm, not had any issues, as you would expect considering what they get put through in combat! The beast part is the price, as you can pick them up on the auction sited in the region of £30-£50. Well worth checking them out for a winter boot option.

So that's the end of 2012, looking forward to 2013, where I hope we can get out there fishing a lot more if the weather plays ball. If not, my plans are to tackle it head on with the gear to match, so have a great New Year - Cheers!WeAreMemorieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05046175648627975424noreply@blogger.com1
